The King Alfred School TEDx Talks 2019

The TEDxKingAlfredSchool event took place before February half term and it was a sell-out. Thankfully, all the amazing talks are now available online via the TEDx YouTube channel.
The day was packed with stand-out moments but the KAS students who spoke all blew the room away with their confidence, bravery and the food for thought they all brought to the day.

Preps This was an idea I tried out over 8 years ago while working in a pre-preparatory school. I was teaching Year 2 children aged 6/7 years old. The concept emerged as a result of the children not particularly caring for their resources, especially the stationery on the table. "How can I instil a sense of responsibility in these children?" I thought to myself. I had tried the friendly teacher chat followed by several reminders, which then evolved into a less friendlier chat. The problem was that the children generally came from comfortable backgrounds where they needn't worry about taking care of things. If something was lost or broken, it would soon be replaced by a brand spanken new and often shinier model.  The idea started with not giving the children any stationery at all at the beginning of the term and instead, giving each child a small amount of monopoly style money. Sir Ken Robinson

Sir Ken Robinson Sir Ken Robinson was one of the first motivational speakers I listened to in relation to education. After that I was hooked. I discovered many more speakers and inspirational educationalists through links and google searches. I still think Ken is one of the best. Not only is he funny, he has a powerful message that we all need to listen to and hopefully take action. Here are two of my favourites from YouTube.

Implementing a CPD Model: Teaching and Learning Development Groups (Cycle Two)

CLICK TO GO BACK TO CYCLE 1 At the end of cycle one, a questionnaire was distributed to gather feedback from staff about the CPD model and what could be improved. The outcomes from the cycle one feedback influenced the design of cycle two.  It was clear from the evidence gathered that staff felt that involvement from an expert would help them move forward with their thinking. They reported that they had only shared what they already knew about differentiation before the implementation of the Teaching and Learning Development Groups had taken place, and that the impact on the way they were teaching was small. In addition, the teachers preferred the Teaching and Learning Development Group sessions to be more practical and they felt that they would benefit from having more opportunities to share their thinking with the wider group.
