Train Yourself To Be Happier

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Shawn Achor's talk 'The Happy Secret to Better Work'. In fact I have watched it at least 3 times. His fast pace, humorous approach to delivering his message is engaging and thought provoking. Towards the end of the talk, there are 5 suggestions on how you can train your brain to be happier:

  • 3 Gratitudes
  • Journalling
  • Exercise
  • Meditation
  • Random Acts of Kindness

These are simple ideas and easy to put into practice. Most of us are doing at least 2 of them already, I am guessing. The one I have never attempted before was writing down 3 things I am grateful for everyday. Here is an example of what I noted down the other day:

My health
Free lunches at work
The people I work with

Unfortunately, I have not made this into a habit yet. When I am super tired in the evenings, which is most nights, I tend to hit the pillow straight away without writing my 3 gratitudes down. Right now I am on holiday so I have had time to reflect. I have decided next term I will record my gratitudes when I get home from work rather than just before bedtime. Let's see if that makes a difference?
